ECOFRIENDLY ACTIVITIES

Agriculture, the primary sector of production, goes hand in hand with the missionary zeal and commitment of the congregation of sisters of St. Martha. In the scriptures we read when the creation story is narrated that God appointed men to “have dominion” over the earth (cf. Gen 1:28), to “till it and keep it” (Gen 2:15). Holy Father Pope Francis in His Encyclical ‘Laudato Si’ explains, “‘Tilling’ refers to cultivating, ploughing or working, while ‘keeping’ means caring, protecting, overseeing and preserving. This implies a relationship of mutual responsibility between human beings and nature”. God taught man about the dignity of labour especially introducing him for the first instance into the primary sector of production that is agriculture.

The equilibrium between man and nature is a well accepted principle in the daily life of CSM. Safeguarding the ecological balance among the organic systems intact through the use of bio-fertilizers and bio-pesticides, CSM plans and designs and invest to the agricultural cultivation attached to each house befitting to an eco-friendly manner. CSM supports for the promotion and production of organic farming specifically to be self-reliant in the cultivation of vegetables.

Our sisters hold the heritage of cultivation. From the early years of the congregation the sisters largely cultivated rice, vegetables, coconuts, spices etc. The industrious and untiring hard work of sisters not only brought forth sustaining fruits but also set an example for others to follow. Pope Francis urges all to “Care for Our Common Home “(Laudato Si') which is the Earth. This could be materialized only through the preservation and conservation of nature without polluting it. CSM encourages those connected activities along with the agricultural cultivation such as animal husbandry schemes, fish and poultry farms, afforestation, installing solar energy systems, rain water harvesting, bio-gas plans and erecting waste management projects etc.
